• DRAVIDIAN SPIRITUALITY

This compact tour enables you to witness the sacred and spiritual side of South India. You will travel off the beaten track to experience the most important places of pilgrimage, like Tirupathi and Rameshvaram, but you will also visit places more popular with Westerners like Thanjavur, Madurai and Mamallapuram. In Pondicherry a visit to Auroville shows you how Westerners are trying to create a spiritual community in India. Staying in villages like Swamimalai and Kanchipuram lets you see and feel how much religion is a vital part of daily village life.

The days of travelling are relatively short, giving us maximum time to soak up the atmosphere.

The best time to visit Tamil Nadu is September to March. In April and May it gets very hot and June, July and August see the monsoon rains. South India witnesses a second smaller monsoon for about 6 weeks in and around November.

2. Tirupathi / Tirumala
After a late breakfast your car and driver will drive you to Tirupathi in the state Andhra Pradesh. This will take about 5 hours. Tirumala is the site of a Great Temple situated on a hill and is the most popular pilgrimage site in the world, surpassing even Mekka in the number of devotees it attracts. On average 40,000 people a day flock to the temple but the number is often higher than 100,000. It is so popular people often have to queue for days to have darshan (standing face-to-face with God) with Sri Venkateshvar. It is possible to pay a little extra and have “special darshan” which means you have to stand in line for only a few hours or even less if you’re lucky. Seeing the inner sanctum where Sri Venkateshvar resides on his throne can be a magical experience.

The remainder of today you could wander around the pilgrimage town at the bottom of the hill or you could go up to the temple complex for a first impression.

Standard: Bliss

3. Tirupathi / Tirumala
Sri Venkateshvar is a form of Vishnu. In the trinity of the Hindu pantheon (Brahma – Vishnu – Shiva) Vishnu is the Preserver. Hindus believe having darshan of Sri Venkateshvar will grant their every wish. Devotees often donate their hair to give thanks for having their wish granted or to renounce ego. Hence you will see many cleanly shaven pilgrims emerging from a building appropriately named “Place for Donation of Human Hair” on top of the hill. Also new-borns are often brought to the temple where the parents give a donation that corresponds to the weight of the baby.

Today a local English speaking guide will accompany you up the hill and explain everything there is to know about this important pilgrimage centre. You will see the different temples, the “Place for Donation of Human Hair” and the temple kitchen where they prepare free food for the tens of thousands of pilgrims who come here every day. You will also visit the main temple where you can see the devotees queuing up for darshan and where, if you so wish, you can have special darshan with Sri Venkateshvar yourself! Which wish would you like to see granted?

4. Kanchipuram

5. Kanchipuram
Today you will visit the most important temples of Kanchipuram. The 7th century Kailasanatha Temple is the oldest structure in Kanchipuram. Check out the original 8th century murals to get an idea on how grand the temple must have looked 1200 years ago. It still retains much of that old grandeur. The temple is named after Kailash mountain, which is situated high in the Himalayas. Hindus believe Shiva sits on top of Mount Kailash meditating. The temple has many niches with statues of Shiva, his wife Parvati and their sons Ganesh and Murugan.

Next you will visit the many shrines, mandapams, gopurams (entrance towers) and the tank that belongs to the huge Ekambaranathar Temple complex. The name of the temple is said to signify The Lord of the Mango Tree, and you can still see a large mango tree whose four branches represent the four vedas, the 3000 year old religious texts of Hinduism.

Kanchipuram is also home to temples dedicated to Parvati (Kamakshi Amman Temple where marriages are held) and Vishnu (the very impressive Devarajaswami Temple and the very old Vaikunta Perumal Temple).

6. Pondicherry
On the way to Pondicherry you will visit Auroville, an international community where people of 40 different nationalities have come together with the goal of building a harmonious township where creed, nationality and colour are ignored. Their utopic vision is inspirational, and you will get to see how they make it work. In Pondicherry you'll have time to delight in fresh French baguettes for lunch.

During the second part of this sightseeing tour you'll set out to see the sights of Pondy, as Pondicherry (new name Puducherry) is popularly known. You'll visit the Shri Aurobindo Ashram, the Ganesha Temple, the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and the Gandhi Statue on the boulevard.

Pondicherry has some top quality restaurants serving both Indian and French cuisines for you to enjoy.

7. Swamimalai via Gangaikondacholapuram and Dharasuram
Before arriving in your peaceful resort in the small village of Swamimalai, you will visit two stunning temples. The Gangakondacholapuram Temple is dedicated to Shiva and renowned for its superb architecture. The Airavateshvar Temple in Dharasuram is named after the Lord (Ishvar) of the White Elephant (Airavata). This beautiful temple is famed for its exquisitely detailed pillars. As Dharasuram is also known for its sari weaving factories, you'll have a chance to see and experience one of these too. The weaver himself will explain to you how a sari is made.

After lunch at the resort you can spend the afternoon visiting the villages Swamimalai and Kumbakonam. Every village in the Cauvery Delta has at least a few temples, making this the beating heart of Hindu India.

8. Kumbakonam (sightseeing Thanjavur)
Today’s sightseeing will take you to the Brihadeshvara Temple of Thanjavur (also known as Tanjore). This temple is popularly known as The Big Temple, as it’s a bigger version of the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple. This UNESCO monument was built in 1010AD and is the crowning glory of Chola architecture. The shining black Nandi statue (Nandi is Shiva's mount) is one of the biggest in India and weighs an astonishing 25 tons!

Thanjavur also has a tradition of classic bronze working. Today you'll get a chance to see the bronze-casters at work and learn about the lost-wax method by which they make the artefacts.

9. Rameshvaram via Chettinad
You will first drive to Karaikudi in the heart of the area known as Chettinadu. The Nattukottai Chettiars are from the Vaishya caste (merchants) and built beautiful mansions from the profits they made by trading with Sri Lanka and South East Asia. This area is also world renowned for its Chettinadu kitchen. You will enjoy a typical Chettinadu lunch in a beautifully restored heritage mansion.

From Karaikudi it’s another 2 to 3 hours before you reach the important pilgrimage town of Rameshvaram (“Place of Lord Rama”). Perhaps the most popular mythological story of India is the Ramayana, in which Vishnu in his incarnation as Lord Rama saves the world and upholds dharma by defeating the 10-headed demon Ravana who had abducted Rama’s wife Sita to the island (Sri) Lanka. Rama’s army was joined by the monkey army of Hanuman and together they constructed a bridge from Rameshvaram to Sri Lanka. After having won the battle, Rama gave thanks to Shiva on the Indian shores. Rameshvaram is built on this exact location and thus is one of the most important pilgrimage towns for followers of Shiva and Vishnu alike.

10. Rameshvaram
The Ramanathaswami Temple has a beautiful corridor and houses a lingam, which is a symbol of Shiva, and is said to have been made from sand by Rama’s wife Sita. The temple has 22 wells, reputedly made by Rama himself by using his 22 arrows to generate drinking water. The water from each well tastes different. Some contain hot water while others have cold water. Prepare to get wet when visiting the temple!

The best time to visit the temple is early morning. In the afternoon you can go to Danushkodi where a long empty stretch of sand eventually delves into the Gulf of Mannar (Bay of Bengal), 33 kilometer short of Sri Lanka. Research has shown that there was probably a bridge once connecting the two countries. This is known as Adam’s Bridge. You can swim here but be careful of strong currents!

Standard: Royal Park

11. Madurai
It will take under 5 hours to drive to Madurai, another of the most important pilgrimage sites in all of India. City life revolves around the very colourful Shree Meenakshi Temple, one of the holiest temples of India. The temple is dedicated to Shiva, so it tends to attract a different, more humble kind of devotee compared to the more affluent followers of Vishnu. Pilgrims from all over India come here to worship, which means this temple fills with people representative of the entire subcontinent!

Madurai is also a haven of skilled tailors, especially in the Pudhu Mandapam, a bustling market in an old part of the temple. If you're interested in having clothing made just for you, this is the place to do it!

Accommodation:

Standard: Madurai Residency

Superior: Royal Court

12. Madurai
It takes about half an hour to drive to the small village of Thiruparakundram where you'll visit the Murugan Temple. The inner sanctum of the temple was cut directly into the millennia old rock formations.

No visit to Madurai would be complete without the experience of friendly rickshaw wallahs cycling you through the suburbs of the city. You'll visit a vegetable market, small local industries, the Gandhi Museum, the dhobi ghats (where laundry is done at the river) and will traverse the labyrinthine narrow streets into areas where people hardly ever see any Westerners. It’s a truly unique and intimate way of seeing the other side of a big Indian city like Madurai.

Accommodation:

Standard: Madurai Residency

Superior: Royal Court

Heritage: Madurai Heritage

13. Trichy
It takes 3 hours to drive to Tiruchirapalli which, luckily for us, is better known as Trichy. In the centre of this large city you can walk up steps to the summit of the Rockfort Temple, from where you can have a great view on the bustling city below.

In the afternoon you will visit the impressive Srirangam Temple complex. Construction on this monument started in the 10th century and the latest addition was only finalized in 1989. With 60 hectares this may well be the largest temple complex of the subcontinent. This popular temple is usually quite lively, and sees many colourfully dressed pilgrims coming to make offerings to Lord Vishnu.

Accommodation:

Standard: Femina Hotel

Superior: Breeze Residency

Deluxe: Sangam Hotel

14. Mamallapuram
A 5 hour train journey brings you to Chengalpattu, where a car will pick you up to drive the last 30 kilometres to Mamallapuram. This laid back village is the perfect place to end your travels.

Accommodation:

Standard: Mamalla Heritagea

Superior: Chariot Beach Resort

South India

15. Mamallapuram
Mamallapuram is most known for her 7th century World Heritage rock-cut monuments. The most famous of these are the Shore Temple, which looks out over the tranquil beach, and the Five Rathas, a collection of small gems resembling chariots. Arjuna's Penance is another stunning piece, a relief carving displaying scenes from the ancient epic tales of the Mahabharata. A local guide will take you to see the most important sights of this captivating village during a 3 hour walk.

The people of Mamallapuram still cut impressive statues from rocks. All through the easy going village you'll see the sculptors creating amazing images from pieces of stone, coaxing flowing images out of immutable rock.

This afternoon you will have time to do some last shopping. If you prefer you can laze on the beach or at the comfortable hotel-pool instead.

Most flights to the West leave late evening or early morning. This evening your car will bring you to the airport in time to catch your flight. You can keep your room until your departure.
