As goes for the entire trip, this is your adventure so you can decide which places to visit, but if you choose you can also allow your experienced guide to make those choices. 3. Shekhawati
Today you will meet the driver who will be accompanying you all the way to the airport of Khajuraho on day 18 of your tour. The car and driver are at your disposal for the duration of your stay in India. Today he will drive you from Delhi through Haryana State and into Rajasthan. Including stops for tea and lunch, this drive will take about 9 hours.

The Shekawati region used to be an important stop on the trade routes between North India and the Arabian Sea. The landlords of this semi-arid area did very well for themselves from the mid-18th century to the mid-20th century. For their families they built beautiful mansions with traditionally painted frescoes on the walls. These buildings are known as havelis.

Shekhawati:

Standard: Grand Haveli - Nawalgarh

Superior: Hotel Castle Mandawa - Mandawa

4. Shekhawati
Nawalgarh and Mandawa are both small and friendly villages which make for the perfect place to acclimatize to the Indian climate and to unwind from hectic Delhi.

Today you will have plenty of time to visit some well-kept havelis, where you can see how people still go about their daily life as if time has stood still for centuries. When walking around the welcoming village, treat yourself to a hot cup of chai (sweet milky tea) on the village square and check on the latest gossip with the approachable local population. We can arrange for a guide to accompany you.

Accommodation:

Standard: Grand Haveli - Nawalgarh

Superior: Hotel Castle Mandawa - Mandawa

5. Pushkar
You will leave early to arrive in the pilgrimage town of Pushkar in time for lunch (6 hours).
Pushkar is set around a holy lake in the Rajastan desert. According to local legend this lake was created by Brahma when he dropped a lotus flower from the heavens on this exact spot. The Brahma temple found in Pushkar is one of the few temples in the world dedicated to the God of Creation.

Pushkar is popular with Indians and Westerners alike, and you'll find an eclectic mix of people when you wander around town or walk on the ghats (steps to the lake). From poor dark-skinned beggars and groups of white Westerners dutifully following their guide to orange-clad sadhus with dreadlocks and musicians playing tabla and sitar on the edge of the lake - people from all walks of life are attracted to magical Pushkar!

This afternoon you can visit the Brahma Temple, the Pushkar Lake and walk along the bazaar. Watch out for the many cows. And for their dung! It is also possible to do a puja on the ghats leading to the holy lake. Your guide will know a trustworthy priest to perform the rituals on your behalf.

During the world famous Pushkar Camel Fair a city of tents is constructed next to Pushkar to accommodate the 200.000 people who converge on this otherwise small town. The dates for 2012 are 18 to 27 November and the dates for 2013 are 7 to 16 November.

As Pushkar is a very holy place please show respect for local customs. You will need to refrain from smoking and take off your shoes when you step onto the ghats. Showing physical affection between men and women is not accepted behaviour in Indian culture, particularly in sacred sites. Eggs, meat and alcohol are not allowed in Pushkar town.

Accommodation:

Standard: Inn Seventh Heaven

Superior: Pushkar Hill Resort - 11 kilometres from Pushkar Town.

6. Udaipur
Including stops it will take you about 8 hours to get to Udaipur, the White City, known as India's most romantic city. Built around the picturesque Pichola Lake by Maharana Uday Singh II (hence the name), this famed city is dominated by the massive City Palace and the stunning Lake Palace which you may recognize from the James Bond flim "Octopussy".

You'll be sleeping in a haveli situated right on the lake. It has a very romantic restaurant with prima donna views on the lake and the surrounding Aravalli Hills:

Accommodation:

Standard: Mahendra Prakash

Superior: Inder Residency

7. Udaipur
Your guide will show you the magnificent City Palace, the beautifully restored Bagore-ki-Haveli and the Jagdish Temple which is dedicated to Vishnu in his representation of Jagannath (Lord of the Universe). Also included is a 1 hour boat ride on the Pichola Lake.
If you so wish the guide can accompany you to Saheliyon-ki-Bari, a pretty garden with fountains and a lotus pool constructed for the attendants of the princess.

This evening at 7 pm you could visit the interesting 1 hour traditional Rajasthani dance show at the captivating Bagore-ki-Haveli.

Accommodation:

Standard: Mahendra Prakash

Superior: Inder Residency

8. Bundi
A 7 hour drive will take you off the beaten track to the atmospheric village Bundi. Strangely enough this lovely village is often overlooked by many travelers. Bundi used to be the capital of a large princely state and the remnants of this glorious past are still very visible. Walk around the old lanes, breathe in the fresh country air or sit down with a cup of chai, take in the scene enveloping around you and let yourself be transported back centuries to the golden days of the ruling Rajputs.

Accommodation:

Standard: Bundi Haveli

Superior: Hadoti Palace

9. Bundi
Morning is the best time of day to visit the Bundi Palace. Inside this old palace you will find, among other things that will capture your imagination, the impressive Phool Mahal (Flower Palace; pronounced as "fool mehel"). Bundi Palace is known for its exquisite murals of flowers, royal processions and of Krishna, the God of Love. Also today you could visit the Sukh Mahal built on the edge of a pretty lake. Rudyard Kipling wrote part of his bestseller "Kim" when staying in this small palace.

Bundi and the surrounding area are home to many interesting temples, cenotaphs, water-tanks and palaces. In the vegetable market of this endearing village you might see the chef haggling down prices of the ingredients for the sumptuous meal he will prepare for you tonight.

Sunset is the best time to visit the crumbling Taragarh (Star) Fort to enjoy romantic vistas on Bundi and the surrounding countryside where pink poppies flower from January to March.

Accommodation:

Standard: Bundi Haveli

Superior: Hadoti Palace

10. Jaipur
It takes about 5 hours to reach the Pink City. In 1876 the old town of Jaipur was painted pink, the colour signifying hospitality. The old city of Jaipur is still hued in pink. The city was built in the early 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II and is the present-day capital of Rajasthan state.

Today you could ask your driver to take you to the marble Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, also known as the Birla Temple after the renowned family who built it. Also worth a visit is the SRC Museum of Indology, which has a very interesting display of many different historical artifacts. For a sweeping view on this 3 million strong city walk up the steep 200 meter path to the Surya Mandir (Sun Temple).

Accommodation:

Standard: Jas Vilas

Superior: Fortune

Jaipur

11. Jaipur
To catch the best light, today's sight-seeing will start with a photo stop at the landmark Hawa Mahal - The Palace of the Winds - where royal ladies could watch the city scenes below without being seen. Continue uphill to visit the massive Amber Fort which was the seat of the maharajas from the 16th century until they moved down to Jaipur 150 years later. Your guide will take you on a tour through the halls, gardens and palaces of Amber Fort and point out the interesting mix of Hindu and Muslim architecture. While it is possible to get an elephant to take you up to the fort, we do not recommend this as the elephants often get treated poorly here.

The circuit of Jaipur continues in the afternoon with the chance to see the great City Palace, which houses several palaces within its walls and also a museum, an armory and a display of the miniature paintings Rajasthan is famous for. Next door is Jantar Mantar, an amazing observatory built in 1728 which shows the exact time precisely. Your guide will explain how these geometric devices for measuring time work, even after all this time!

You should have enough time left to visit the Hawa Mahal again in the different light of afternoon. From inside you can look down to the street from where you were taking pictures at the start of the day.

Jaipur is reputed for gems and carpets. Do remember that this is your trip and so only you decide whether you want to visit a "factory" or not. If you want to shop, your guide and driver will be all too happy to show you the best place to do so. If want to, you can also be given a brief explanation on how to make jewellery and/or carpets.

Accommodation:

Standard: Jas Vilas

Superior: Fortune

Jaipur

12. Agra
After about 4 hours of driving you will reach the ghost town Fatehpur Sikri. The mighty Mughal Emperor Ashok built this stunning city in 1571 but after his death - less than 14 years later - it was abandoned due to water shortage. It's a magical place with beautiful buildings and pavilions showing architectural elements derived from different religions. Akbar had three palaces built for his Hindu, Muslim and Christian wives. The large mosque built in white marble is still in use.

After lunch it is just one and a half hours drive to your hotel in Agra.

Very interesting to visit tonight is a live multi-media show at the Kalakriti Centre on the life of Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal for his deceased wife and love of his life Mumtaz Mahal. Headphones will provide translation in your language of what the elegantly dressed actors on stage are saying. This (biased) take on the tragic history that lead to the creation of what has been called the most beautiful building in the world, is accompanied by vibrant colours, smoke, cinema, song and dance sequences and lots of light. You cannot get it more Indian than this!

Accommodation:

Standard: Taj Resorts

Superior: The Retreat

13. Agra
The sight-seeing of Agra starts with visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the World's Seven Wonders. Few people leave unimpressed by the stunning architecture and detail unique to the Taj.

After lunch you will continue to visit the Agra Fort. Building was started by Akbar in 1565 but substantial additions were made by his successors, which has resulted in many distinctly different styles of architecture. It grew so large it basically became a city in itself. Nowadays the Indian military still has a base within the walls of this enormous fort.

Accommodation:

Standard: Taj Resorts

Superior: The Retreat

14. Orchha
The Shatabdi Express leaves Agra at 0815 in the morning and arrives at Jhansi railway station before 11 am. From there it is about 45 minutes driving to your lovely retreat in Orchha.
This small village is known for its laid-back vibe and its old temples and large palace.

Today afternoon you can visit several of the interesting temples of Orchha and see the Jehangir Mahal (Palace). You could also rent a bicycle and cycle in the surrounding countryside.

Accommodation:

Standard: Betwa Retreat

Superior: Orccha Resorts

15. Alipura
After a late breakfast it will take just 2 hours to reach tiny village Alipura. The palace here will be your home for tonight and makes for a great base to explore the rural village and surrounding countryside.

Accommodation:

Standard: Heritage: Alipura Palace

16. Khajuraho
After a little over 2 hours of traveling you will reach the small town Khajuraho. Around 1000 years ago, the powerful Chandela dynasty built many temples in this region. The temple's ornamentation shows different scenes from daily life, hunting and war but also scenes from the famed Kama Sutra. Those erotic sculptures were meant to educate the people and to appease the mighty God of Thunder Indra. The temples of Khajuraho are known as one of the highlights of Indian temple-architecture.

At present the western group of temples is best preserved and it is this group of temples you will get to visit today.

Accommodation:

Standard: Clarks Khajuraho

Superior: Ramada Khajuraho

Jaipur

17. Khajuraho
Today you could visit the southern group of temples, which are from a later date than the western group, and the Archeological Museum which houses some beautiful images which have been found in and around Khajuraho. For something completely different visit the Adivat Tribal & Folk Art Museum.

Among other possible trips are a visit to the Raneh Falls (1/2 day) or to the peaceful Panna National Park, where you have a good chance of spotting crocodiles and leopards.

Recommended is a 3 to 4 hours bicycle tour through the country side. Friendly guide Bilal will show you a traditional farm house, a local school and a tribal village. Bilal is great company and will explain how the Indian Government is trying to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate of India.

Accommodation:

Accommodation:

Standard: Clarks Khajuraho

Superior: Ramada Khajuraho

18. Varanasi
Today you will fly from Khajuraho to Varanasi. Your flight will depart Khajuraho at 1325 hours and arrive in Varanasi at 1415 hours. This flight can be included in your tour price.

Location of hotels is important to Indian Rose Tours, especially in a city like Varanasi. You will be staying right on the ghats in a hotel where most rooms offer views of the river Ganges. Of course we do not make any concessions when it comes to quality and cleanliness of accommodation. The hotels have all the amenities you have come to expect from us.

Standard: Rashmi Guest House

Superior:  Palace on Ganges

Best:         The Gateway                   - Not on the ghats.

Varanasi

19. Varanasi
Today you will go for a sunrise boat-ride on the river Ganges. This is not so much to see the rising sun as to watch the hundreds of devotees performing rituals on the banks of their holy Ganga, as the Ganges is called in India. Your guide will then accompany you on a walk through Old Town before bringing you back to your hotel for breakfast.

The many steps leading to the river are called ghats. The most important ghat in Varanasi is the Dasaswamedh Ghat. For as long as people can remember devotees celebrate the Ganga Aarthi here every night around 7pm. This set of rituals for Ganga Mata (Mother Ganges) is accompanied by music, incense and many vibrant colours. To witness this age-old ceremony is an experience you will not easily forget!

During the recommended excursion this afternoon your guide will walk you through the bustling narrow market streets and alleyways of Old Town to reach Manikarnika Ghat (The Cremation Place on the Ganges). You will hop on a boat from where you can observe the cremation-rituals happening on the ghats while your guide will explain the deeper meanings and intricacies of this age old custom.
The boat will continue to Dasaswamedh Ghat where you'll reach in time to witness the evening Ganga Aarthi.

See our blog for more on this excursion and more on Varanasi and India in general:

20. Varanasi
Varanasi, also known as Benares and Kashi, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. And it shows! On one hand the city seems eternal and the same as it must have looked a thousand years ago, but on the other hand you can see here the changes India as a whole is going through. It is a special place for all Hindus but especially important to followers of the popular god Shiva, to whom many temples in the Old Town are dedicated. Hindus believe Shiva sits on a mountain top in the Himalayas and that the Ganges falls from heaven and flows into India via the matted locks of the meditating Shiva.

On the outskirts of Varanasi is the place where the Buddha held his first sermon after reaching Enlightenment in Bodhgaya, in present-day Bihar. Sarnath is one of the four most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists along with Bodhgaya, Lumbini (in present-day Nepal where Gautama Buddha was born) and Kushinagar (in present-day Uttar Pradesh where Buddha died). Sarnath attracts Buddhists from all over the world.

During this half-day trip to Sarnath you will get the chance to see two classic stupas and a modern Buddhist temple. You will be able to walk around the bodhi tree planted at the same place where Buddha held his first sermon around 2500 years ago! You can also visit the Archeological Museum in Sarnath, which houses many superbly crafted ancient statues.

Accommodation:

Standard: Rashmi Guest House

Superior:  Palace on Ganges

Best:         The Gateway                   - Not on the ghats.

21. Varanasi / Delhi
Varanasi is the preferred place for Hindus to breathe out their last breath. The most auspicious place for a Hindu to be cremated is the Manikarnika Ghat, also known as the main burning ghat. Visiting the cremation grounds is not for the faint-hearted but is also a unique experience you will not be able to witness with the same intensity anywhere else in the world!
Please do show respect for local customs by not taking any pictures, as this is strictly prohibited.

You will then take an evening transfer to the railway station, where you will board your overnight train to Delhi. A representative of Indian Rose Tours will assist you at the railway station. The Shiv Ganga train journey is scheduled to take about 13 hours.

Again, you can also decide to book a flight. If you prefer to fly, do not forget to mention this when booking your trip with Indian Rose Tours.

Standard: Rashmi Guest House

Superior:  Palace on Ganges

Best:         The Gateway                   - Not on the ghats.
